Imagination Station Detroit

Detroit, MI

The Imagination Station is a nonprofit based in Detroit. In the summer of 2010 we purchased 2 long-abandoned houses and 3 vacant lots on Roosevelt Park facing Michigan Central Station. Now we are in the process of creating a community media center and a rotating public art space, and we need help.

hi michael! just posted a new update a few minutes ago: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/imaginationstation/detroit-needs-a-statue-of-robocop/posts/189477 new pics in there from the 3D scans at the fabrication shop. long story short all's well it's just a looooong process. woo! thanks for your patience. it's one of those things where we could have raced to get any old statue together, but since we're working with such a precision sculptor and the MGM movie studio license and a super detail scan and fab shop, all these points take a while. if it helps we're right there with you on trying to figure it out ourselves as the pros do their work. :-) in the words of robo, thank you for your cooperation!

    RoboFootprints + RoboCharity

Happy pre-spring, RoboBackers! The sun is shining here in Detroit and the RoboBears are re-awaking from cyborg-hibernation.

Fred Barton's precision-detailed RoboCop form has been shipped in many pieces to the http://acrosstheboardcreations.com 3D scanning and fabrication shop. They've sent along some pictures of RoboCop *in the computer* (<-- Zoolander ref, +5 points) before it is re-physicalized at a larger scale, attached to this message.

For the local production team here in Detroit, we've been in the same boat as you as far as wondering about timelines on when the statue will be here. Basically we are working with world-class wizards who are donating a lot of their time on a remarkably time-consuming process since the reality is $60,000 turns out not to be a lot of money for the tasks at hand. But! We've been constantly assured that like an actual wizard, a RoboCop statue is neither late nor early... it arrives precisely when it intends (<-- Lord of The Rings ref, +5 points).

So when you look at the beach and see only one set of footprints during the hardest wait for the completion of a crowdfunded statue of your life and ask "Where were you then RoboCop?" He will say, "That, my RoboBacker, is before I had arms to carry you." (<-- religious poem ref, +[indeterminate points, we are a non-denominational crew]).

In action around the project, the RoboCharity fundraiser for http://forgottenharvest.org that sprung up alongside the statue project is hosting a really big fundraiser with the good folks at Funny Or Die, coming up April 27th in Detroit and hosted by comedian Seth Meyers. Awesome!

We've also just heard that the Go Comedy improv troop here in Metro Detroit is getting ready to perform their RoboCop The Musical which should be awesome in a different way: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gbsdetroit/go-comedy-and-gbs-detroit-present-robocop-the-musi .

The next statue steps we should be sharing are the physical foam pieces here in Detroit for casting along with additional access to the labs for more frequent photographs and updates.

So stay tuned, stay strong, stay wizardly, stay bronze, RoboBoy, stay bronze (<-- The Outsiders ref, +10 points, no question),

With love and sincere thanks for your continued support as the progress bar glaciates forward,

    Team Robo

Happy RoboDays! A Very Merry Update. Stay Out of Trouble.

Merry Christmas, Happy Poly-Holidays, and a Pre-emptive New Year's greetings strike to you, RoboBackers!

We're excited to let you know that a long and crucial and awesome progress bar has finished loading and we're now entering a new phase of RoboDevelopment.

Fred Barton http://the-robotman.com has completed his brand new, custom, kicka**, MGM-licensed RoboCop sculpture which is now on its way to an undisclosed facility (hint: not Area 51) for 3D scanning, digital scaling, and foam fabrication. From there the forms will arrive at Venus Bronze Works in Detroit where the statue will be cast and poured by liquid metal ninjas who've lovingly roundhoused many other important works in the city: http://www.modeldmedia.com/features/venust13908.aspx and http://www.thedetroiter.com/site/venuspage.html .

Thanks for your patience as we fill in this expert-level statue sudoku puzzle. We hope to be able to share pics with you Real Soon Now™.

And oh hey, check this out. Peter Weller was in town a little bit back (he says hello!) and gave a great interview to WDET Detroit public radio that's more than worth a listen: http://wdetfm.org/news/story/PeterWellerInterview . He talks about the statue and much else. Super duper smart and cool dude.

Also attached, a couple pieces of sweet RoboCop graffiti that have shown up in the city. Photo credit for "stay out of trouble" to dailyinvention on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dailyinvention/6274472975 .

Thanks again for everything you've done and continue to do to support this truly amazing, one-of-a-kind adventure in crowdfunded RoboStatuary, and enjoy what we hope is a relaxing time with the ones you love.

Cheers O'clock, and Stay. Out. Of. Trouble,

Team Robo in Detroit and everywhere

Detroit Fanfare, Peter Weller, Party, Post Office, Progress

    RoboBackers,

Check it out, coming up on September 24th and 25th it's the Detroit Fanfare, a big comic book convention in downtown Detroit: http://www.detroitfanfare.com . RoboCop star Peter Weller will be there and we will too, representing the project at our very own RoboBooth. Yes this is awesomely nerdy and yes this is awesomely awesome. We'll be sure to take pictures.

At our booth we'll have updated illustrations of the statue, awesome Detroit RoboCop shirts, the Detroit RoboCop statue story and timeline so far, and, somewhat wildly, the debut of a 4-feet X 6-feet crowdfunded oil painting-turned-video game called "The Spirit of Detroit Vs The Blight" that includes RoboCop as a playable character: http://bit.ly/pTku4O .

On the night of Saturday the 24th there will be an after party at PJ's Lager House ( http://pjslagerhouse.com -- a great time to cash in on your free drink if you're in that reward bracket ) with all door money going to Forgotten Harvest ( http://forgottenharvest.org ) as featured by RoboCharity.

*ALL* of your packages should already be in your hands, or in the mail in a few cases. If you've given us your address and we haven't spoken one-to-one in the last week about a special case, RoboSanta should have come for you by now. Sorry if he got stuck in any of your chimneys along the way. RoboSanta tries his best.

Fred Barton ( http://www.the-robotman.com ) who's painstakingly executing the RoboForm we'll be casting for the statue says he's almost done...maybe a month...before we can scan the pieces and make another big dent in statue production.

Hugs, kisses, and shiny metallic exteriors,

    Team Robo in Detroit

hi david, we think the issue is probably this: when you funded the project you had an option to choose a reward level and may have selected the "no reward" option which means your email wasn't automatically into the custom badge system. we've seen that a few times, sorry for the inconvenience. drop a quick line to john at coexsystem@gmail.com and he'll sort it out for you. thanks, man! - jerry

Ze Rewards Are In Ze Mail! Online Badges, New RoboPodcast ++

    RoboBackers,

The lion's share of t-shirts, pins, and a letter from Bob Morton on behalf of OCP's Statuary Concept Division are in the mail or zipped up to go, so if you haven't received anything yet, check your boxes in the days ahead. Shwoow! We wish we had a RoboMailroom! Behold a very small slice of the hundreds of package

As a backer at any level, you have a fancy, custom digital badge waiting for you right now at http://detroitneedsrobocop.com/robobadge . Just type in the email address you used with Kickstarter and your personalized badge will appear like so:

Post it on your website, print it and post it on the refrigerator, iron it on a t-shirt, wheat paste it where bill posting is allowed, tape it to your brother's back, or anything else you'd like that's digitally or physically possible.

Inspired by the statue, the Detroit film podcast The Projection Booth with Mike and Mondo Justin just put out an *epic* 2 hour + interview with actors and crew from RoboCop, and an update on Detroit statue production with some project stories (starting at approximately 2 hours(!) and 4 minutes in): http://www.projection-booth.com/2011/06/22/episode-16-robocop . Note: the best way to listen to it seems to be to click the "Download Show" button, which will bring you to an easier to use player. Enjoy!

    Robocop Poster

We've been surfing the seas of details over here, making sure all the studio, production, and location processes and permissions are in place. We anticipate more firm announcements on projected manufacturing and rough unveiling dates in near future.

Thank you so much again for making this happen. We've been trying to keep RoboBacker updates limited to really significant milestones while we work through everything, but recognize that you can't see everything we're seeing over here, so we'll be sure to update more frequently with more stories of what it takes and what it feels like to realize this collective vision.

    With much love,

Hi Chris, I just received a message from Amazon with your concern and emailed you back. Don't worry, you were only ever charged once for your dollar! Kickstarter charges at the end of fundraising, not when you pledge, so that's the confusion. Here's my email: Hi Chris, I'm one of the people working on RoboCop statue production and just received your message from Amazon. You were only charged $1 (Kickstarter screenshot of the record attached). The way Kickstarter works, people pledge money, but aren't charged until the fundraiser ends, and only if the fundraiser reaches its goal. When you pledged a dollar on February 24th you weren't charged at the time. You were only charged $1 last night at or around 11:20 PM EDT when the fundraiser ended. This is how Kickstarter works -- it's a great way to make sure something can be afforded before anyone pays for it. Does that make sense? Many thanks for your contribution to the statue! Sorry if the fundraising system was confusing. I can assure you that all is well and you were ever only charged the one dollar that you pledged. YOU ROBODID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, here we go! One crowdfunded RoboCop statue in Detroit coming right up. RoboThank you so, so RoboMuch to everyone who backed the project, spread word, suggested ideas, and helped out, and to everyone who will continue to do so as production moves forward. We're all on a 21st century adventure here, and you can follow the process as it unfolds at http://detroitneedsrobocop.com

This is just the beginning, not only of the physical creation and installation of the statue, but of a wider crowdfunded revolution we're all participating in, where things like this can actually happen. We're proud to be a part of it with you, proud to be representing Detroit, and proud to roll into the future RoboStarter style.

In very new news, it looks like the statue is going to be installed on Wayne State University’s TechTown campus!!! Thank you, TechTown! A perfect and fitting location amongst innovation and learning in the heart of Detroit.

As always, you can reach Brandon Walley with RoboQuestions at brandon@facethestation.com or 313-510-8049.

Until the next episode: "Serve the public trust. Protect the innocent. Uphold the law." And of course, uphold the awesome, as you have done. "Thank you for your cooperation. Good night." ❤ - TeamRobo in Detroit
