Gwyn Michael

Worcester, PA

I am an environmental artist working in digital mixed media and paint. My work serves to enlighten and educate about environmental concerns while creating strangely beautiful images for decorative use. Environmental art by my definition is the confluence of art and environmental restoration. Please check my website and blog for more about me and my work.

Hey World ~ I'm Not Giving Up

Hey generous backers and the rest of the world! I thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in me and I hope you will follow me as I move on. This will be the next to last update here. I'll be back with one more to wrap things up on Monday. It's been an interesting ride and I've learned a lot during this process. I may or may not be back with another project on kickstarter, but one thing is certain. I am not giving up! I realize my intentions here were not clear enough, but I do believe I can learn how art will change the world and take the action to do so. I have no shortage of ideas. So I leave you toady with an beautiful example of how one musician is doing exactly what I have in mind with his music. His music is his activism but so are his actions as he is seriously involved in several world changing charities. I have to admit I have a massive crush on this man, and I really dig his music. Have a listen!

If It's Not Working, Fix It

Here we are counting down the last 10 days of the fundraiser and just about 40% funded. I have to admit I had a bit of a meltdown yesterday but thanks to my resilient nature and a few caring friends I bounced back and considered my options.

I did a serious evaluation of what the project looked like and what I was saying and decided I could do a lot better. So I gave the project a makeover. My ultimate goals are the same but I think I made my intentions clearer. I hope you'll agree and I'd love your opinion.

In the spirit of change I have also given my website a makeover and I think my intentions are clearer there as well.

This final week I will be doing everything I can to contact people and ASK. Ask them to look at the project. Ask them to consider pledging. Ask them to spread the word. I am asking you to ask as well.

    THANK YOU!!!!!

Who Does She think She Is?

    Fund raising is really hard.

This has been the most stressful thing I've done since quitting the "real" job and I decided it's time to lighten up. Odds are against me at this point but it ain't over till it's over!

Don't break the poor kids heart. Make a pledge and pass the hat! We need everyone.

    Happy Arbor Day!

"I try to give people a different way of looking at their surroundings. That's art to me." ~Maya Lin

    Photobucket" />

This picture was taken at Gwynnedd Wildlife Preserve located about 2.5 miles from my home. It is a favorite place of mine to walk and take pictures. I have photographed these 3 trees many times in all seasons and I delight in the way they are different each time. Different but the same. There is a comfort in knowing they will be there waiting like loyal friends. In the aftermath of the devastating tornadoes this week I know that the face of the landscape can be ravaged in moments by the forces of nature we can't control, but so many trees are suffering or dead at the hands of humans too. That can change. That must change.

Last year on Arbor Day I launched my first gallery of trees on a then new website. It was then that I began donating a potion of my proceeds to tree planting and conservation. I could not have imagined the one one year later I'd be calling myself an environmental artist and raising funds for a project to see how I can use art to change the world, but here I am.

When I was a child I was fascinated with the Dodo bird. It was the only animal I knew of that had gone extinct at the hands of humans and I felt a great sadness that I would never see a real one or even a photo of one as the only images in existence were illustrations.

Imagine if you will a world in which the above image is all you have to know what a tree is. A world where there are no birds to nest in that house.

I don't want to imagine that world which is why I am here. Like Maya Lin I believe art can change the way people see. Please help me discover how we can better use art to change the world and save the landscape for the future. For every person that pledges today and through the weekend I will plant one tree through American Forests.

Thanks to those that have already pledged we are %30 there. Let's make this last 2 weeks a landslide!

Happy Arbor Day. Now go hug a tree!

    Times a wasting!

19 days and 76% to go. 19 days till the next full moon. YIKES! Still 19 days is a long time and I am ready to go for the hard sell.

Today I took my outreach to the next level. I am contacting individuals, important people I've never met and saying hey, check this out. It was a challenge in that I had to for the first time try to reign in my big picture in a few sentences. Not a skill of mine. I believe this is of interest to any one that has already pledged to the project or is thinking about it.

This has taken me to a whole new level of excitement about the project.

    (Greetings)

I am currently raising funds for a nonprofit environmental art project that is as much research as art related. I am exploring the possibilities for the arts to partner with environmental causes and green initiatives to inform and educate people of all ages while sharing the arts. With new publishing platforms being created, and opportunities for presentation inexpensively through new media, we have the opportunity to reach people everywhere with these materials which could also easily be presented live. I envision eBooks, books, DVDs, installations, live exhibits and performances being created through the collaboration of artists, environmentalists, teachers and more. The possibilities in my mind are huge and this project is just a first step albeit an ambitious one. Please take a moment to look at my project on kickstarter.com and let me know what you think. If the idea appeals to you please support me with a pledge, and or by spreading the word.

    Thank You!

    With Enthusiasm,

    Gwyn

    Pretty cool eh?
