Almost There! One more day to donate!

Only one day to go on this kickstarter and we’re over our goal! We are beyond thrilled. The Flux Foundation and the Zoa team want to thank you for your donations. Of course, we still have a way to go on our total fundraising goal, but this is such an amazing start to our summer. We appreciate all your support!

This weekend we will be at Maker Faire (http://makerfaire.com/) at the San Mateo fairgrounds, featuring Flux Foundations’ Brolly Flock, Weevils and Tweet Haus - where we will be creating birdhouses, teaching people about the program and doing some urban ecology education. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fluxfoundation/sets/72157629265614730/). Also look for our Dragon Wagon and FLUXicleta. Come look for us at the fairground and introduce yourself, we’d love to meet you.

We are really getting into the process of making Zoa, and will continue to update both our blog (http://fluxfoundation.org/category/blog/) and this kickstarter, so stay tuned. And please, every dollar counts so if you can continue to support us, and/or know a friend who would like to make a tax deductible donation, please send them our way. After tomorrow we will be accepting donations here: http://fluxfoundation.org/donate/

    Much Love and Flux,

    The Zoa Team

    Flux Metalheads Rock!

On a bright beautiful Sunday afternoon, where do you find the Flux Metalheads? Inside the corrugated confines of American Steel, obviously. Sunday was the first day of prototyping in the metal shop, and Fluxers old and new spent the day trying to figure out how exactly one builds a giant seaweed monster out of schedule 40 pipe. It’s a beautiful thing when the metal shop gets humming, and with the plasma cutting, grinding, tacking, and welding it was one hell of a hum.

By the end of the day there was a system for keeping track of all the joints in the pipe, a full sized grid to build upon, and a beautiful, wacky, creepy six-feet-or-so of Zoa large as life and ready to spawn an entire sculpture. We’ll be continuing our beastly fabrication next Sunday, and be sure to come to Bay 3 for the Thursday night meeting to check out the progress and see for yourself what Flux hath wrought on this first of many days of metal structure fabrication.

This update is brought to you by Spheres.

We're in the making mockups and creating prototype phase of the project. We can feel the momentum building - and we're getting past the 'planning' to the 'doing' phase of Zoa. These gorgeous Spheres, which have their own flame effect, will be lit after we burn the wooden seeds midway through the festival.

Our lovely Jess made an image of Rebecca's model of the 'exploding planet' effect the spheres (see below).

And Here's the Nina sphere at roughly it's intended height of 15 feet. Margaret's doing a bang-up job of laying it out, and it's going to be pretty impressive up high and on fire.

    More updates to come!

    Things are getting exciting!

Wow, thanks to your help we're right on track. We are 1/3 through our 45-day kickstarter and at exactly 33% of our fundraising goal. We are so impressed with your generous contributions. We're getting there!

We've been remiss in updating you on our project updates. We're in the 'revving up to go' and 'getting stuff organized' stage: gathering volunteers, forming teams, meeting up and burning things. It's getting exciting around the shop.

    Team Updates

Our Volunteer Coordinator is taking names and sending volunteers to teams that most fit their interest. Please sign up here if you can help out.

To get everyone up to speed and ready to start building, welding instructor Liisa Pine came to our shop at American Steel to teach a review course for our metal team volunteers.

The Zoa wood/burn team has been hard at work coming up with schemes on how to build the seedpods. We'll be working on building one of the football "pods" that will contain the awesome flaming spores, and we completed a prototype this week (see video).

Our Fundrasing team is meeting this week to plan some awesome events this summer including parties, a gallery show and perhaps some smaller events to help meet our fundraising goals.

The 'Geek' team recently started discussions regarding Zoa's power, lighting, and interactive elements, and will meet regularly to continue planning their geekery.

More to come! Once again we really appreciate your support.

    Sincerely,

    The Flux Team
