Defragmenting the Planet One Groove at a Time

    Hey, Defrag Supporters-

Hope you all had a fun and productive summer.  Apologies for the long pause--there's been lots going on.

Over the summer we've made lots of headway on the editorial/content side, and have finished about two-thirds of the interviews, profiles and layout for the first issue.  This has been a particularly fun phase of the project for me, as I got to interview (via Skype, usually) an eclectic and talented bunch of artists and musicians from around the world.

Very inspiring to be not only shining a light on some great creative work, but also to be building a network of innovative artists around the globe, all interested in sharing and connecting across borders and supposed cultural divides.  It felt like the world was getting a bit smaller and defragmenting a bit with each interview.

We were also able to work on design, and the new layouts are a big step forward from the version shown in the fund-raiser video.  I hope to post at least a short video of the "new look" soon.

Unfortunately, most of the tech/architecture work has been on-hold for most of the summer.  Steve, our tech-lead, is back in the saddle and working hard at a custom solution for delivering the app.  Steve has many years experience as a developer, working on large creative projects for clients including The Cartoon Network, Bronx Museum of Art and Nike.

    Welcome back, Steve!

Thanks to all our supporters for your help, input and patience.  Look for a "new look" video soon, as well as information about when the first issue/app will be available.

    All the best-

    David Olson

OK, this guy's run off with our money. Won't respond here or to private messages. What an ass.

On September 16, 2011, nearly 7 months ago, you posted (above) "Look for a "new look" video soon, as well as information about when the first issue/app will be available." Do you define "soon" as many months??

This project was funded 11 months ago. You haven't showed us a thing. You won't even SAY anything.

If you're truly still working on this project and have not robbed us all blind, then please give us something!!

    Defraggers

Well, the fund-raiser is over and now the real work begins. Thanks again for your support. In the next few weeks you'll be getting instructions on how to submit your media for the first global collaboration piece. Your still images, video, audio and text files will be re-mixed by myself and other digital artists into "Meet Your Planet," a multimedia/video piece that will be published in the first issue as well as made available online. Some of you will also be receiving limited edition DVDs. You will also be told about other opportunities to contribute and collaborate with the artists and other contributors for the first issue. We've got a couple more projects brewing that should be very cool, fun, and unique. We are already hard at work preparing and editing content from around the world, and have started re-vamping the app itself. We plan on publishing the inaugural issue in mid-summer. Please feel free to post comments, feedback, questions, suggestions, etc.. either here or directly to me through my Kickstarter email address. More soon, and thanks again. The Final Stretch: Only Four Days Left!

    Defrag Supporters-

Thanks to everyone who has supported the project with pledges large and small.   We've raised over the half the funding necessary to finish the first issue and are gaining momentum.  A huge thanks to those who have  blogged, emailed, tweeted and posted about the project--this helps enormously.  Please help spread the word!

We are adding artists, musicians, photographers, writers and projects from all over the world--very exciting.  Here are a few hightlights:

Ayush Ranka is a talented young photographer based in Bangalore, India.  His beautiful compositions subtly hint at a deeper, universal message.  From his artist statement: "Ayush believes that in a true democracy everybody has a right to a life with dignity regardless of their background. Any form of art has a very important role to play in fostering a sense of understanding between people in a very direct and unadulterated manner."

    http://www.ayushranka.in/

Tammim Barghouti is Egypt's best known contemporary poet.  His latest poem was written during the protests in Tahrir Square in Cairo, were it was repeatedly read and sung aloud to the crowds as inspiration.  It will appear translated into English for the first time in the premiere issue of Defrag.

Defrag will highlight the exploding digital music scene in South East Asia: Burmese dub-steb, Cambodian hip-hop, Chinese reggae...  A wild assortment of creative music that is ready to bubble up from the digital underground.

If you haven't done so already (or recently), please consider posting the project url to your FaceBook page, tweeting it, or sending out to your personal networks.

With a little team-work we can get this done and make Defrag a reality.

Thanks again for all your support and work-

    Thanks to everyone...

I wanted to thank everyone who has pledged to the Defrag magazine project so far. With your help we've raised more than 20% of our $12,000 goal with three weeks left to reach it.  Thanks for pledges both large and small.

Thanks also for forwarding, blogging, tweeting and posting on FaceBook.  Telling your friends about it is one of the best ways to promote the project.

I've been getting interest from several high-profile bloggers and journalists over the last few days, so hopefully Defrag will be getting some press this week.

I wanted to tell you about two recent additions to first issue:

British pop band Cornershop is excited about the project.  We'll be featuring music and videos from their latest album and interviewing front-man/writer/producer Tjinder Singh. Cornershop mixes Indian intrumentation and grooves with a Brit-pop sensibility, and is best known for their #1 UK hit, Brimful of Asha.

Darlene Charneco is a Long Island, New York-based visual artist whose work has been shown extensively in NYC and elsewhere.  Her beautiful multimedia pieces deal with networks, memory, mapping, and the archiving and sharing of human experience.   One of Darlene's MemoryPalace pieces will be the center of a global collaboration, with supporters (that's you) adding memories, thoughts and images to the piece.

Look for another update soon... we're adding content and features almost everyday.

Until then, thanks once again for your support and help in spreading the word.

    Yours-
