Posted project update #4Thank you all for helping us reach our goal!
Hello backers!
First, BP got a cap on the well and it seems to be holding. It's the best spill related news since it happened. Hopefully containment will continue.
Second, thank you all so much for your support. After a big push at the end, we reached our goal. It's amazing. Some hometown press in Nevada City, in The Union newspaper and on KVMR radio really helped. Thanks to Jesse Locks, Michelle Rindels, Roger Hicks and Paul Emery for helping make those happen.
It's really encouraging and inspiring to receive contributions from you all. I take the support seriously and can guarantee hard work toward a long form documentary. Hopefully this Kickstarter campaign will turn out to be the beginning of a snowball that grows into more funding from other sources and a fantastic feature film.
Anyhow, Scott and I are currently planning a return trip that will take place in about a week. We think we will check out some areas in Florida that haven't yet been hit with oil, and hopefully won't. I want to show what the Gulf looks like in its undamaged state. After some time in Florida, we will work our way westward toward Louisiana, where we will reconnect with some subjects there and continue working on attaining more access restricted areas around the site. Also, we want to talk to folks about how they feel, now that the oil has finally stopped spewing.
This week in New York we are lining up a couple interviews with geological and oil experts.
We are also spending a lot of time working on the structure of a longer format piece. The documentary is a mutable form, but of course it's good to have a structure in mind along the way.
Anyhow, I'll continue to keep you all updated. Thank you so much and I look forward to sharing more!
best,
jesse

Posted project update #2The second voyage...
Post CommentHey everyone.
I've recently returned from a second voyage to the Gulf. It was challenging and eye opening and fun.
A short doc is on the way, and will be up in a couple days. But I wanted to post this video update first.
Just five days of fundraising left, but I think with a big push we can do it.

Hope you will get to tell more stories of the people. The people of the Gulf aren't just victims - they are real people dealing with this real problem. Your footage shows strong craft. Keep it up.

Dark Horizon: A Documentary about the Gulf Oil Disaster- FUNDING TO RETURN TO GULF by Jesse Hicks
Dark Horizon is a feature documentary about the BP oil disaster that tells the stories of those most impacted and confronts those most responsible.
- $5,000 funding goal
- 07/16/2010 Funding Ended

This disaster may not have occurred had BP taken proper precautions and had a plan in place for such a malfunction. Someone is responsible for this cost saving practice and should be exposed. There is always a responsible and irresponsible way of doing business and it would b e interesting to know which of the two practices BP follows to earn their profits. Another question I have pondered is why the US government did not request NASA’s help, an agency familiar with solving complex problems from great distances. Good Luck and take care – This may be a time to walk softly and carry a big stick.
Hey Jesse,
I'd like to know more about the people in the gulf whose livelihood depends on oil, and what they think is the best way to balance their needs with those of the folks whose livelihood depends on fishing, tourism, etc, as well as the with important need to protect the fraglile coastal environment. How do these two groups of people, with seemingly mutually exclusive interests, think we should go forward from here?
I appreciate hearing as many personal accounts as you can manage, touching as broad a spectrum as you can - tourism-related operations, diving/party boats, specialists in the local ecology, etc. Clearly the impact on the seafood industry is huge and deserves a big share of the attention, but I'm interested in how folks in other impacted industries will get by, as well as what those who've long studied the region's environment are seeing and expecting.
After watching the first phase of your work, I thought it would be useful if some of the allusions made by the interviewees were confirmed. One example was the fellow who said he had read about the raised cancer levels in crews who worked to clean up the Exxon Valdez spill. Not sure how or if you would want to incorporate data to back-up such points, but it would ensure viewers don't mistake justifiable concerns as local rumor or unfounded panic (in this instance, I was curious enough to do a search about the cancer levels, but I hadn't known about the concern previously).
Thank you for bringing these people's lives into clearer focus for us. Safe travels and good luck.
