And so the year of camera on a string begins!

    Hello everyone!

A new year has begun - the perfect time to begin the updates on cameraonastring.com! The plan is to add a new camera to the site every Sunday for all of 2011, so now you know when to look.

The first camera of the year is up. It had been placed at a bus stop in Schenectady, NY. Unfortunately, this is one of the ones that didn't make it back.

There are actually a number of cameras that have been put out since the last update. I've been sending them out to get developed and the turnaround time has been unbearably long, letting anxiety creep up. (Did they get lost in the mail? Are they ever coming back?!)

I've also realized my timing was a bit off to get this moving. The winter season is not so friendly to this project! Ah, well - you live and you learn, right?

Anyway, the challenges will not triumph over getting a new camera up each week, so start checking in. And best wishes in the new year!

    - Dawn

You haven't update the website in about a year. I hope this is still going on and you didn't just pocket the donations...

A quick update on where we are now

The first batch of camera on a string rewards went out today, so some of you should keep an eye out on your mailboxes!

For those of you in the $25 and up levels who haven't done this already, drop me a note and let me know if you want to go ahead and get your prints or wait to see what happens in the coming year.

More fun news: The cameras are in! And thanks to all of you wonderful people, we were able to get a few extra. Now it's a matter of hoping for some good (or at least dry!) weather to put them out in. Keep your fingers crossed with me. I'm itching to get some cameras out there just as much as I'm sure you're ready to see some more pictures!

    What to expect now...

Visit http://cameraonastring.com for the special thank you post for all of the lovely people who helped make the Kickstarter campaign a success.

I bet you all are wondering when the weekly updates with new cameras will begin... Here's what's going on:

Before any new pictures start showing up on the site, we have to wait for the funds to be processed and transferred, order and receive the cameras, etc. It's getting harder to find places to get the film developed at a reasonable price, so we're going to try sending them out, which adds some more turnaround time in the process before they get to be added to the site. We're probably looking at a few weeks, but once the ball gets rolling, you should be seeing new pictures each week!

We also have to wait for the funds to go through before rewards start getting sent out. For those of you who pledged $15, be expecting a request for your mailing addresses soon. For everyone who pledged $25 and up, start thinking about how you want your rewards to be filled - keep in mind, you'll get to choose from the photos already on the site as well as any to come in the next year!

    Thank you all again!

    Funded!

camera on a string by Dawn Graham

There’s no telling where or when you’ll see a camera on a string. They just sort of pop up, surprise people, and disappear as quickly as they come.

We just passed the funding goal!

We just passed the funding goal! I can't tell you all how excited (and surprised?) I am! Thank you to everyone who has helped out in any way - making pledges, spreading the word, offering words of encouragement... You all are great! I need to go jump up and down now... THANK YOU!

P.S. There are still 7 hours to go.... Any additional funding means more cameras in more places. :)

    The Pictures You Don't See

Pictures that don't make it onto http://cameraonastring.com generally fall into one of these three categories:

    "WENT MISSING"
These are the cameras that don't make it back at all. Sometimes the camera is ripped off, leaving behind the string and sign, all sad and lonely. Other times, everything is gone, with no trace that it was ever there. Some of the "missing" cameras have a slightly more tragic story. When a camera is retrieved and still has around half a roll or more left, it'll usually be put out in a second location. If it "goes missing" from the second site, the pictures from both sites are lost. Don't take a camera on a string - it makes people sad. :(

    TOO MANY
"Too many" is a good thing. 10 pictures from each location are put up on the website. That means there could be up to 17 other photos (and sometimes a couple more) that don't go up.

    TOO FEW
These are the photos that live in a sort of camera on a string limbo. Like it says above, 10 pictures from each location go on the website. If there are fewer than 10 pictures from a place, the camera doesn't go up on the site at all.

    BUT I WANNA SEE!
Curiosity got the best of you? Wondering about that picture you took? The good news is backers get special access to some of the pictures that aren't on the website. Obviously, I can't really share any of the photos from the first category... But stay tuned - later tonight, all you backers will get your first taste of some of the photos that fall under "too many" and "too few"!

    Rural America

One of camera on a string's wonderful backers sent me an important question that I wanted to share with everyone:

"What about rural America? I'm down with the project, but when you speak of the initial sites, is there a chance you could mix in rural communities as well. I realize that $500 could make that happen, but I hope that camera on a string is about America and not just urban America."

Ideally, camera on a string will go EVERYWHERE. The locations on the map in the video were all specifically marked and include places like Spearfish, South Dakota and Death Valley, Nevada.

The reality is that there are a number of challenges in getting cameras out to any site, large or small. If the Kickstarter campaign is successful, it will cover the costs of the cameras, developing, and the rewards, with only a minimal amount left to aid with other costs such as travel - if we're lucky. Historically, the cameras go places I go anyway, rather than me going places for the singular purpose of putting cameras out.

Also, the smaller / more rural a place is, the more it helps to know about the place to have a successful camera on a string experience. Cameras have been located in more rural areas that I knew well and were retrieved with only a few pictures taken. One that was up during an all day event with over 200 people in Bristol, VT ended up with only 4 pictures at the end of the night. In places I don't know well, it becomes even more of a challenge. Even cameras put up in more urban areas with heavy traffic can be hit or miss.

So now I'm asking for suggestions from all of you for good camera on a string sites. The more specific the better! Not just the name of a town or city - give me certain addresses, days of the week, dates for special events... I may not be able to follow up on all of them, but the info makes a big difference! Feel free to send your suggestions in a message or post them directly on the comments page.
