Posted project update #5the instrument that speaks in two languages
Post CommentLast year after a trip to Oaxaca, I fell in love with the teponaztli (traditional drum from Mexico) only to find out recently it's a cousin to the krin from West Africa. This of course only fed my desire to explore the connection between these two traditions. Here is a clear example of both drums and the language they speak. The accents may be different but the words they say are the same.
TEPONAZTLI FROM MEXICO
KRIN FROM GUINEA
I was fortunate enough to acquire a teponatzli the last time I was home in Oaxaca and it looks as though a krin may be entering my life in the near future. It is my goal to continue my studies of both traditions (Mexica & West African) but I am going to focus on this little talking drum to help me understand how they relate to one another.
If you are interested in exploring this with me please help this project get funded! I already have a trip planned to Mexico, it's getting to West Africa that I am working on and with your assistance, even in as much as passing this story forward, I will be there this fall!

Posted project update #4in the language of traditional dance and music the world is not so big
Post CommentFirstly, I want to thank you for your support of this project. In an effort to give you a better understanding of what it is I am trying to accomplish here I would like to share with you two videos. Both of these videos are of teachers of mine, one traditionally from West Africa and one from Mexico. I hope that you, like me, can see the similarities between them. This is the bridge I am building with each step I dance and rhythm I play .....
DANZA MEXICA AMEYALI AMEYALTONAL
MOUSTAPHA BANGOURA OF LES BALLETS AFRICAINS de GUINEE
I am so close in my heart and yet still so far away from my goal. I think to myself, $1500, that's just $150 from ten people, or better yet, $15 from 100! What an exciting thing to be a part of, please help me spread the word, between us we must know 100 people who would be happy to see this story unfold.....

Post CommentWell here we are, half way through day one and two backers already, thank you from the depth of my heart for your support. I can hardly wait to tell the children all about this project and share stories about the adventure with all of you. Now, the summer sun is out in Seattle and I have a wedding to attend. Viva L'Amour, Bless and good night.
P.S. remember to look up at the stars, the moon is full and the Perseids are dancing in the sky for one more glorious night....

Posted project update #1welcome to the Goderich Waldorf School of Rokei Sierra Leone
Post CommentThis is an introduction to the Goderich Waldorf School in Sierra Leone. When I first saw these videos last May I was immediately struck by the amazing children and what a wonderful thing this has been for them. The families, the teachers and everyone who has been involved with making this school an important place for the children has so much love and care for what is being done here that I had no doubt in my mind I wanted to be a part of making this dream come true.
Thank you for watching these two short videos, I look forward to being able to introduce you to the children on a more personal level soon!
