LGBT in Grand Rapids grassroots media

    http://avantdrag.wordpress.com/2011/08/01/g-r-i-i-d-on-the-equality-michigan-viit-to-g-r-and-media-reporting-on-violence-against-lgbtqs/

We posted a link on our blog to G.R.I.I.D., a local democracy-in-action group of community activists...

2 excellent blogs by them, one on Equality Michigan visiting Grand Rapids

and the other about the anti-gay assault on one of the attendees afterwards...

    the importance of awareness...

One of the BIGGEST reasons that Jewly and I want to do this project... to help people preserve their rights and dignity... in our own home town of Grand Rapids MI there was an incident where a local LGBT community member was attacked after an event held by Equality Michigan...

It is sad that in 2011 this crap still goes on... I attended the Equality Michigan get-together to shoot some video that night, met some really nice people, ran into a few friends, felt good about the community that I live in....

I never met Dave before this, we are just Facebook friends with multiple real life friends in common. His stoicism about the attack, and the outpouring of support in the community and online are good reminders that there are plenty of decent people out there... and this whole event just reinforces the need for us to keep pushing this project out there... people in our communites need to see for themselves that LGBT people are no different then anybody else...that they have same rights as anyone... that they are valuable, respected and loved members of this community

    getting started...

To date we have shot video at West Michigan Pride Fest 2011 in June, and the 2nd Annual Network Neighborhood Bash in July. Both of these events were outdoors. It was interesting to catch the artists in this environment… without the drama of stage lighting, the interplay of shadow and form, and worst of all…no AC (temperatures were in the mid 80’s and 90’s during these shows!)

We also shot a promo on the riverfront in Grand Rapids. Some of that will probably make it into the film as well.
Jewly has an interview in the works with a Traverse City artist. We also have another artist from Detroit coming to town for a show as well. Both of these will shoot in mid-August. We are putting together our wish list of Grand Rapids drag artists to interview and will start setting those sessions up in the next week or so.

Gina Grover has agreed to contribute photos to the project. She will accompany us on our expeditions and share the photos via Avant Drag’s blog and social media… already she has posted a few good photos to share. Gina is also introducing us to a new friend that puts together drag shows… we are super excited for this to happen… I am predicting that things are about to get mighty interesting for us…
