My Favorite Way to Enjoy a Slice...

What's my favorite way to enjoy a slice of pie?

Breakfast, with a cup of black coffee, preferably with a great friend:

This morning, My friend Alex and I stopped in to Four and Twenty Blackbirds -- who will both be providing slices from of their pies to those with the SHARE YOUR SKILLS and GIMME A SLICE pledge level, as well as a whole pie for the PICNIC IN THE GRASS pledge level.

I chose the Lemon Chess (funny, because I had seriously been dreaming about lemon curd the previous night), and Alex, the Black Bottom Oatmeal.

Baker Interview: Allison Kave of First Prize Pies

Allison Kave is the Founder of First Prize Pies, a New York-based pie company that specializes in pies that I like to call "what the eight-year-old in you really wants". Her creations have delicious titles, and flavors -- S'mores Pie and Root Beer Float Pie, for example.

She'll also be sharing two of her pies -- Bourbon Ginger Pecan and Spicy Hot Chocolate -- and their recipes, at the Pie in the Park Pie Picnic at Smorgasburg.

Here, some of her latest pie-related thoughts:

    Sweet or savory?

    I can't choose. I won't choose. You can't make me!!

How did you come up with the idea/recipe for the pie you will be
    sharing at the pie picnic?

The recipe for my Bourbon Ginger Pecan pie is one that I've been developing for over a decade. It had been the annual dessert that I would make for my family Thanksgivings (and still do!). I don't really remember when the inspiration struck, but I'm a ginger fanatic and at some point it occurred to me that pecans + bourbon + maple + ginger would be a kickass combination. The inspiration for my Spicy Hot Chocolate pie came from my mom, who has a whole collection of chili-based chocolates at her shop, Roni-Sue's Chocolates. She lived in New Mexico for about 10 years (I was born in Albuquerque), and anything with spice is right up her alley. I think I wanted to create a recipe that I knew she'd love to eat.

One great pie tip (crust or filling!):

I'm sure you've all heard it before, but its true: keep everything realllly cold. I keep my flour in the freezer! This keeps the gluten from developing too much, and gives you a more tender, flaky crust.

Best way to enjoy a slice?

In summer: on a picnic blanket, with some ice-cold bourbon-spiked lemonade. Any other time - a la mode!

You can order Allison's delicious creations on her online shop, as well as at a few shops around New York and Brooklyn including the Green Grape in Ft. Greene, at Roni-Sue's Chocolates at the Essex Street Market, on the menu at Fatty Cue and at the Smorgasburg and Hester Street Fair.

Follow First Prize Pies on Twitter and Facebook.

In My Mailbox: Gingham, Plates and Pie Servers...

In preparation for the pie picnic, there have been a lot of boxes dropped off at my door. I'm trying to save myself the hassle of running all over New York with my granny cart -- plus its much easier to find 5 great picnic baskets online than in any brick and mortar store I know.

Below, some picnic items that arrived in my mailbox this week:

First, lots of plates! (Also, forks!) One in "Kickstarter green"!

Next -- gingham! And lots of it! I'll be covering the tables at the Kickstarter booth in various colors of gingham, and those who pledged to the PICNIC ON THE GRASS level, will get a little gingham blanket in their picnic basket:

Lastly -- 24 pie servers! After holding a pie event for 4 years, I've realized one can't eat a pie correctly if you don't have a good pie server. Sharing knives just doesn't cut it. I'm kind of in love with these servers, especially the meticulous way they are packaged...

Check out all the images from my mailbox on the Pie in the Park Facebook page.

Only 3 more days to go to fund the pie picnic project, and there is still lots of pledges open to submit a pie, or to get a pie slice ticket.

    Tell your friends!

    Love and Butter,

    Lauren
