    Printing Update

    Hi everyone,

I just want to give you a quick update on where things stand with printing of the books. The printer accepted my files and printed an approval copy of the book this week. The only thing I decided to change was the color of the paper in the book. But that means I need to get another approval copy this week. I know it will be fine, but that is their printing protocol. The copy I approve must match the books printed in the full order. I expect I will place that full order this week.

I will send out another update once they tell me when I can expect to receive those books.

Thanks for being patient. I know this has dragged on much longer than expected.

Go for it, man—before those damned elbows get in any new trouble that needs to be chronicled.
        Best, Randy

    Thank You One And All!!!

    Dear Backers,

When this project expires in less than two hours, it will not evaporate. Thanks to all of you, it has exceeded its goal. And the madness that is The Elbows is that much closer to reality.

Do not let down your guard. Someday in the not-to-distant future, you will be minding your own business, carrying on your affairs in the way you think best. And then you will find something unexpected in your mailbox or on your front stoop. A package. Seemingly harmless. But looks (and books) can be deceiving. Beware!

Until then, trust that I will be very busy preparing for that day, making good use of the funds that you, in your infinite wisdom, saw fit to supply. You will most likely hear from me a number of times as I post updates on progress.

Thanks again and have a great spring!

    Big Glasses Time Machine

Get out your big glasses and take a trip back in time. Hear a portion of Chapter 6 read aloud in John Schultz's Story Workshop classroom.

John Schultz originated the Story Workshop approach to the teaching of writing back in the 60's. He founded the Fiction Writing Department at Columbia College Chic ago, which is now one of the top two or three programs in the country. One of the features of a Story Workshop classroom is the reading aloud of stories in class. This video was one of a series taken for the department's teacher training program.

When I filmed John for the Kickstarter video on this project's home page, I had a teleprompter script that each of the people I was filming would read. My plan was to cut them together into an integrated whole.

Let's just say John went off script. Which was a blessing. The fact that he did (as well as my friend Brett) opened up all sorts of other possibilities for the video. During the filming, John mentioned this teacher training video where he was reading part of The Elbows in a class. He said I should ask Gary Johnson at Columbia about it. Gary was good enough to find the videotape and burn a digital copy for me. What I didn't remember was that I was actually IN that class.

When I got the video home and played it for my kids, they freaked out. My youngest didn't even recognize me. See if you do (should be no trouble).

What you're getting here is a glimpse into the early stages of my attempt to turn this parody of Nikolai Gogol's short story, The Nose, into the novel-length piece that became my MFA thesis. I completed the thesis and graduated but didn't actually complete the novel. Instead, I set it aside and didn't get back to it for years. That was dumb. But we'll leave that one for the biographers, shall we?

So put on those Big Glasses, sit back, listen as John explains some of the literary traditions of The Elbows, then fasten your seatbelts. The time machine can be bumpy...

    The Elbows and The Nose

A number of people have written me wondering, "Bill, how do you come up with this shit?" or "What have you been smoking, because I want some of it."

OK, so it wasn't quite so hard as it might seem to come up with this shit, because The Elbows began as a class assignment to parody a short story called "The Nose," by Nikolai Gogol. "The Nose" is a very, very funny story, so you might say I had a running start. But "The Nose" is a short story, and The Elbows runs about ten times longer. Or more. The parallels are strongest in the novel's first three chapters, after which The Elbows tends to go its own way while bending toward a similar conclusion.

You can read "The Nose" here: http://h42day.100megsfree5.com/texts/russia/gogol/nose.html

As for what I've been smoking... I tell you what. Stop by tomorrow and I'll show you.

UPDATE: I have a confusing update to the above annoucement. The Kickstarter blog for this project is now the active one. When I originally launched this project, I didn't realize I could do it all here, so this is where you will find all of the recent news, contents, and updates about the project. Sorry for the wild goose chase!

    This is the New Blog

    Hi Everyone,

When I originally planned to launch a Kickstarter project I didn't realize that each project became a sort of blog, so I created one at Wordpress and linked to it from my project page. I now realize I can do the blog right here at Kickstarter.

So this is the new blog. After a month on the road, when I focused mainly on emailing contacts about the project, I should now be home most of March. Watch for a number of new items over the coming days.

I hope to get a digital copy of a video taken in a class at Columbia College where an excerpt from the novel was read out loud. I'll post some outtakes from the project video. I should be receiving sketches for the cover design and will post any the artists permit. Also, backers will have a chance to read additional chapters of the book. Chapters 3+4 were posted a few minutes ago. More to follow.

    Bill
