Things you can do if you can't afford to donate (or even if you can).

Hi everyone, and thanks again for checking out my project (or for donating, if you've already donated. & if you're one of those people, YOU RULE).

Right now I'm sitting next to a copy of Annie Dillard's collected works, which are inspiring me as I write these essays. Highly recommended nonfiction: Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. Another thing that I've been thinking about, besides sharks, muskrats, and fecundity -- all topics of PaTC -- is What You Can Do If You Can't Afford to Donate (Or Even If You Can).

I've been getting a lot of support from people regarding this project. Some of it is monetary, and some of it is emotional. Some people have said, "Hey, I really love your project idea, but I can't afford to donate any money right now." I understand! So here's a list of things you can do if you can't afford to donate. (And remember, if you can't afford to donate, every little bit counts, and $5 is enough to get you a Backer Reward. Okay, onto the list.)

    1. Link to http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/544537136/a-photoessay-book-about-living-well-with-bipolar-d on your Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal, status update on Google Chat, etc.

    2. Tell your friends and family. Maybe one of them can donate $2.50 to you and you can contribute $2.50 and then you'll have $5 to donate! See how it works? Tell your co-workers (your nice ones, anyway). Tell anyone you think who might care. Remind them of the Backer Rewards.

    3. Write about this project on your blog, if you have a blog. If you want to interview me about the project for your blog, my email address is meggy.wang@gmail.com.

    4. If you have a personal story that you think might be relevant to the writing of the book, email or message me! I'm still writing the essays, and would love input.

If you have any other suggestions, feel free to leave them in the Comments section. And again, thanks so much for all of your support, whether you've donated or not.

Zubin: That's a really good idea, and the professor had suggested that, as well -- a combination of donation to charities and purchasing books from the publisher to donate to charities.

    Important! Update about project terms.

After an email exchange with a professor of mine, I have been advised not to distribute the book myself, but rather, to donate a percentage of the royalties to charity. Please see below for the updated project terms.
ETA: Due to issues of first rights and copyright, I am no longer able to distribute the finished product myself. However, any remaining money will be invested toward the book and its publication; 25% of the royalties of the book will be donated to mental-health related charities, which the backers will help me decide. In the case that the book never be picked up by a publisher, I will print Enitens myself and distribute it for the purposes of Backer Rewards.

If this changes your opinion about your donation, please know that you can change your donation at any time prior to the October 30th deadline.

Thank you so much again for your support!

Another hybrid option could be to use the funds to invest in publishing, but then use the charity money to buy books from the publisher (or retailer, etc) after it is published, to donate to charities or libraries, etc.

Thomas: I'm slightly changing the terms of the project (see next update), but the Asian Community Mental Health Services sounds like an awesome place to donate royalties to! Plus, I'm moving to SF next year -- does ACMH accept volunteers? Maybe this isn't the place for me to ask you! Ha.
