Posted project update #5BIG THANKS KICKSTARTER BACKERS!!!
Post CommentHoliday Greetings to You!
I am so so so happy that we met and exceeded our goal here on Kickstarter. It is all because of YOU. Now we're counting down the days to the tour - the band gets here January 19th - I CAN'T WAIT!!! -- we've got a pretty exciting itinerary developing. I am SURE this tour will be a tremendous success. Yesterday I commissioned a "Green Monster" - and am quite excited to see the outcome in about 10 days.
If anyone has any friends who wanted to go ahead and donate and missed the deadline - we still have our paypal support open at www.xylopholks.com
I wanted to send out thanks to all of you as the plans continue to develop and will keep everyone posted with pictures and short video soon.
All the best for a wonderful 2010!
Yours,
Jonathan -

Posted project update #3The Next Step!
Post CommentGreetings Everyone,
Thanks to you our Kickstarter goal has been met!
What does this mean? - it means we're one step closer to a complete successful tour.
I can't wait to share the documentary on this incredible experience! However - we can still use support! The costs estimated in the $1,500 goal were kept minimal so that our goal would be reasonable and met. Realistic costs are quite a bit higher. From the beginning I have promised to make this happen, but with your financial support the scope becomes much greater.
We had one small set back this week. My costumes have been in storage with a good friend in Brooklyn. Unfortunately he got bed bugs and the bugs got into the costumes. Everything had to be thrown out! It's an opportunity for me to have new costumes designed in India - however, it's another financial consideration.
India update:
On November 1st I played as part of a program to draw attention to Nalanda Way. The concert was organized by pianist and musical director Anil Srinivasan and featured Anil's friends who happen to be some of the top musicians in Chennai. Anil worked with the Nalanda Way Girls Choir for the last 3 weeks and took these girls from a place of having no musical training to a very nice performance attended by hundreds in the audience. If you know anyone in Chennai.. there are a series of events coming up in lovely venues around Chennai:
http://nalandaway.org/aaa/event_schedule.htmlNalanda Way is also worthy or your awareness:
http://nalandaway.org/This will I will rehearse with a violinist who's a part of the administration of AID India/Eureka Schools. I've roped him into being a part of Children's Day with me. The plan is for us to play a few compositions together and perhaps solo. We'll do classical compositions heard in temples here and ragtime xylophone (with me as Skunky on xylo!...Vivek on violin...we'll coach the kids on handclaps and appropriate "shouts" marking in the breaks) --
Main objective: To have some fun with the kids at these schools! Please continue to pass along the word about our tour as well as this kickstarter site and know that your support is going to go a very long way. That's my promise!
Sincere Thanks-
Jonathan/Skunky (Skunky has gone unharmed as he is with me bed-bug-free) -

Posted project update #2CNN.COM, Best of New York! - Best of India next!
Post CommentHi Everyone -
Ok - 2/3 of the way there. I should be posting video so you'll know the Xylopholks should have gotten the Nobel Prize...but next time, right?
We just made Village Voice's Best of New York issue!
Best Buskers dressed as Animals
http://www.villagevoice.com/bestof/2009/award/best-buskers-dressed-as-animals-1436289/It's no "best pizza" - but there was indeed some serious competition in this category!
Also - big thanks for Mike McCurdy who wrote up my story on ireport - within hours it was linked to the front page of cnn.com -
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-343139
I think I'm the first Skunk to appear on a beach in India.
So YES people - the dream is coming true. The Xylopholks will be touring the country in January. We'll start in Chennai, then off to Kolkata, Mumbai/Pune, and Delhi.
I'm booking venues and schools now. It's been an awesome experience here as everyone has been so so helpful and welcoming to the group.
You can still help!! --- if possible can you link our page to your facebook - to your mass emails - just your aunt or uncle about this - tell your dog about us...take a picture of your dog and send it to me so that I forget about my stomach ache for a second.
Thank you thank you thank you - your support is appreciated always.

Posted project update #1India, Gothamist, New York Post?
Post CommentHey Everyone,
Amazing amazing amazing that we're getting a positive response. I'm so touched by all of you. I realize many of you have been supporting us all the way from the beginning...giving at our fundraising events in NYC and even now. This is totally awesome.
To our new backers - big big smiles and thanks to you now too!
To those who have helped spread the word - this is so important!I've been getting a pretty good response so far! A writer from the New York Post wanted a photo of me as Skunk out in India. I'm going to try to get this done this week. I think if I set up on a residential side-street I will be instantly surrounded by children ...I'm just working up the courage there. Dressing up in animal costumes in NYC is a lot easier than India - not because of the heat - but because all the exploitation that folks experience here. If I do capture a scene with children on a side-street here I should be sure to get Pinky out on that street for an impromptu concert for them in January.
Last week I went for a shoot of Eureka Schools' DVD pilot project. This is to aid school chlidren in these villages learn English through Tamil. It's loosely based on a well known program in the U.S. featuring large yellow creatures as well as Blue Monsters.
Read about Eureka Child here:
http://www.eurekachild.org/I woke up this morning to the regular Chennai traffic noise and an email that mentioned an article reporting on Skunks in Manhattan:
http://gothamist.com/2009/09/27/skunks_invade_manhattan.phpAs always - anything to help spread the word is so so appreciated.
Every day leads to new developments with our tour:I'm about to send off a DVD to Delhi for Fulbright/USIEF (United Stated India Educational Foundation) to see about helping us with booking there. This might include an evening at the U.S. Embassy.
We already have made contacts with an organization that caters to street children and orphans in Delhi. There's also a club there that caters to an expat community that might be more like playing at Rockwood in the East Village of NYC.
Kolkata is also strong with contacts - there's a school for children born with HIV, concert hall venues, a couple of organizations that bring jazz acts from abroad, etc.
I am planning on making a trip to a costume shop here and see what is available. Depending on our resources I think it would be fabulous to collaborate with these children in animal costumes, and gift the schools with a costume or two upon our departure. If we can't find the cutest possible costumes, I might ask the rest of the band to purchase in U.S. and bring some in January.
Ok everyone - please please keep yapping about this project - I know how ridiculous it sounds in the U.S. but in India it seems to make perfect sense and I know this is going to be a tremendous experience with all your support!
Yours-
