Posted project update #11Woot!
Hello all!
Got the 2nd sample in the mail yesterday night.
Great news; issues from the first round sample were resolved, it no longer feels lethal (the edges on the first one were sharp). It's little lighter weight an and a little more matte, both of which I like a lot better. Some issues with the hinge were worked out, and the only thing that remains is a trip to Home Depot to find the right screws for the hinge (the ones the manufacture provided, the head was a little too large, and weren't the best option to allow the hinge to close fully. I switched them out for other ones and we're good though, they are just a little long). Sorry If I'm rambling! Basically we're ready to place and order really soon! Now for new pictures:A couple things to note.
1. I set this one in a little, but that is totally optional, it doesn't have to
be set that far in, and in fact for the hole marking template, I'll design it so frames will be set in about a .25 of an inch, (the hing being flush with the outside edge, but not proceeding)
2. I've got a piece of cardboard in their now which I had measured out for a backing order I'll make // I'm going with black mounting board, which will be rigid but thin.Larger images if you'd like here: http://imgur.com/a/UXKgE
Thanks!

Posted project update #9Working Sample
Hey everyone!
So we've made great progress! Here are photos of a working sample I'm testing out. There are only a few small changes—mostly to the screws—I want to make. Otherwise I think it fits well, works well and looks pretty good. It's slightly more industrial looking than I had originally envisioned, but it feels nice an solid. The spring clips for holding things in place work really well also. As far as the backing, currently what I have here is a little heavy duty, so I'm going to explore some other options. Let me know your thoughts and or questions. Here's a link to larger versions of the horizontal images if anyone would like. http://imgur.com/a/Kc7rMAs far as next steps, after these small revisions, I'll start full production. As soon as I have a timeline for that I'll let you know. Thanks guys!

Thanks Joel, some of the edges feel a little sharp, but the pull is folder over and is nice to the touch.

Hey Chris, thanks for the suggestions. I think I want to have it as ready to use/be installed as possible, so I think the handle should be worked out for people. Though you point about Ikea people already being comfortable with a little effort is a good one. The Hinge plate is the same height as the frame itself which is nearly the height of the cubby. I'm planning on shipping a template to mark the holes also. I'm not sure if the sleeve is detachable actually I'll see when I get the sample. I"m pretty sure the piano hinge we're using is more affordable than the Ikea ones. And I'd like to get a feel for how it works first. I'm going ahead and ordering two samples one with a folded edge pull handle-part of the profile, and one with a knob. Thanks!

Hey Chris, Basically there will be a screw hole punched for the pull/handle. If I go with frame being bent out from the edge, there won't be the hole for a handle of course. Here's what the bent edge option looks like: (this was from an alternate proposal, so disregard the other elements) http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7042/6994060959_bfbf8b2d79_o.jpg This isn't necessarily how I'd want the bend to work, I think it would work better for the fit for it to be L shaped, with the horizontal leg pointing back inward to the left. As far as aftermarket handles / the other thing to keep in mind is a lot of handles require two screws and therefore two holes. while the one depicted here would only use one, so that become potentially problematic. As for assembling/installing it, it's a pretty standard piano hinge, it's four screws into the unit its self (the same as it would have been with two hinges. I've measured and the hing holes should clear the height (top and bottom) that the wooden pegs take up, though I'll make 100% sure with the sample, The holes can be move if needed, it's just cost a little more 'cause I think they'd then have to be custom. Let me know if you have any other questions Chris, I'll keep you guys posted otherwise. Thanks.

looks damn good, the matte will go great with my new glossy gray expedite set!
Like the tweaks.
