    WE DID IT!!

Dear “More Business of Being Born” Backers,

WE DID IT!!  Thank you all so much for making our project happen.  This is amazing!  We are thrilled to announce that “More Business of Being Born” is now fully funded for self-distribution.

This means we will be able to pay for publicity, marketing, advertising, and all our other self-distribution costs and can move forward with our October 18th release!

We can now launch our new web store this month on thebusinessofbeingborn.com, where you will be able to pre-order all the DVD’s.  Beginning August 8th, you will also be able to catch some sneak previews of the new films on our website and on October 18th we will release them all!

We would like to send a special shout-out to Dr. Glen Elrod, OB/GYN of Wasilla, Alaska who pushed us over the top with a $10,000 pledge.  We love hearing about heroic obstetricians like Dr. Elrod, whose solo practice provides hospital back-up for all the area’s midwives. (Who knew that Wasilla has an almost 30% rate of out-of-hospital birth?) Ricki has already booked her plane tickets to Alaska to host Dr. Elrod’s wife’s baby shower and a local screening of “More Business of Being Born.”

It’s been a wild ride for us on Kickstarter, but it’s not over.  We can fund the project over 100% so that we have even more resources to get the word out about birthing options.

So please keep spreading the word and check out this recent article on Parenting.com - and keep an eye on People.com for an upcoming article as well!  Let’s see if we can take this through the roof in the final 5 days!

Maybe there’s even another Dr. Elrod out there? We’re ready to book another flight!

Lastly, here is a little home video of Ricki’s son Owen during the magic Kickstarter moment:)

    Love & Thanks,

    Ricki & Abby

Yay!! This is a LIFE-CHANGING, powerful, ENLIGHTENING project you have embarked upon & 1,000 congratulations for having reached your goal (early)!!!! Thank you so much for exposing much-needed truths about birthing options and misinformation that had many, including ME, believing that a conventional, in-hospital birth was the only way to go! I'm so glad to have found you here on kickstarter - I watched the documentary twice last weekend as a result, & now, the hubby & I are sold on natural birth and being as educated as possible on all OPTIONS concerning our health care- we really have you to thank! So thank you very much & BRAVO!! :)

Woohoo! I am honored to be a backer...a small contribution felt like a drop in the bucket, but thank goodness you have so many strong supporters behind you! Thank you for doing this again! The first documentary was monumental. It helped me stand up to the doctors in a calm, very educated fashion (even though I wanted to sock him in the nose) Even though I had a short calm delivery & after my beautiful, healthy son was put in my arms...he made a quick comment about a mid-wife who delivered a "dead baby" because she did what the Mother asked. Bastard!...it's on my son's birth video...nice. Ricky, you can use it in your video if you want it! ...Really, thank you so much. Keep soldiering on!

Crystal, I'm horrified that doctor said that to you :( having it on film is very powerful. Sometimes people who should know so much better leave us breathless with their lack of sensitivity!

I'm so grateful Ricki and Abby are making these fabulous mind opening movies - so good for humanity and such an antidote for the insensitive comments and unhelpful social messages being promoted around childbearing. I too am so proud to add my little bit to the project. love and hugs, Carolyn

    WE'RE ALMOST THERE!

    Dear Kickstarter Backers,

We are so overwhelmed by the support we’ve received since the last update!  We are almost within $15K of our goal with just 6 days left to go.
Thank you all so much for your participation in our project and for all the outreach you have done to raise awareness about it.  Please keep it going for another 6 days!

We have finished the first DVD and are close to finishing the second. Ricki will be filming a tour of LA’s Sanctuary Birth Center tomorrow and we are editing away in New York!
There is a lot to get accomplished this summer, but our success on Kickstarter has been a huge inspiration and motivator.  We have especially loved the personal messages and comments that we’ve received from you all.

There has been some exciting news in the birth world lately:  Ricki wrote a fantastic blog for Huffington Post last week and recent articles on CNN.com and Huffpo mention “The Business of Being Born.”  Clearly, there is a quiet revolution happening in the birth world as more and more women are learning about their options and reclaiming the birth experience.  We are so honored to have played even the smallest role in this movement.

    Love,

    Ricki and Abby

You played a big role in my birth experience, too. Watching your film convinced my husband about natural childbirth and he turned out to be an incredible support for me. He was my birth coach, for sure, and it turned out to be a HUGE bonding experience for us. Thank you! I can't wait to watch your new DVDs and to share them with friends.

    The Halfway Point

We are almost two weeks into our Kickstarter campaign and so excited to be almost halfway to our goal!  Thank you all so much for your support.

We are also excited to add a new tier to the reward packages – now for $250 you can also receive a personal five-minute phone call from Ricki Lake!

In the editing room (aka Abby’s mother’s living room,)  we are busy putting together the first DVD, “Down on The Farm, Conversations with Legendary Midwife Ina May Gaskin.” The film will be finished today (yay!) and available for online rental at www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com on August 8th.  Below is a little video of Abby at work...

Please keep spreading the word to your social networks about the project!

    More updates to come soon.

    Love,
    Ricki & Abby
