PRESS RELEASE
MY BROTHER JACK - Larry Morelli and Silas Finch
Kehler Liddell Gallery is pleased to present “My Brother Jack” an exhibition of painting and drawing by Larry Morelli, and mixed media sculpture by guest artist Silas Finch. Morelli and Finch are the silent muses behind “My Brother Jack,” an independent feature film by writer/director Stephen Dest that will be shot in New Haven this fall. Dest’s worldwide search for artists to inspire complex characters from his script came to a Cinderella style close when visited the studios just down the street from his set. The exhibition will feature works that appear in the film, as well as related undisclosed works.
Larry Morelli paints with a rare combination of unyielding gusto and sophistication, akin to the great gestural abstractionist Willem de Kooning. His paintings explain human existence as a series of moving marks—metaphorical swarms of self-awareness, memory, and the undefined. Frequently, Morelli leaves sections of his canvas exposed to instigate tension between figure and ground, and the conscious from the subconscious. For this show he will present a retrospective of work from the 1990’s to the present.
Silas Finch makes work from found objects, scoured from swap shops, flea markets, curb sides and antique stores. His interest in American history, icons and technology inspires his work, which references a century of events, from the JKF assassination to the Watergate scandal to the invention of clip-on panty hose. Finch takes pleasure in making work that revives obsolete objects and makes meaning out of lost or anomalous parts. In Finch’s hands, the life of an object never dies, it changes.
The gallery will host a special opening reception party to bring together the artists and the cast, crew and production team of “My Brother Jack” with the New Haven public on Saturday, August 6 from 7-9pm. The party will include a sneak peak screening of promotional footage from "My Brother Jack” that will remain on view throughout the run of the show.
The gallery will host a conversation with the artists on Sunday, August 14 at 3pm.
