Posted project update #17Good News!! The compilation is almost ready!!!
Post CommentGreetings friends and supporters of the "Pop Yeh Yeh research project"!
I know I haven't posted an update in a while, but the wait is finally over. I received notice last week from one of my contacts in the Pop Yeh Yeh community in Malaysia that the final setlist that I sent nearly seven months ago has been cleared (after they diligently contacted every available artist, composer, and lyricist in their network of friends and peers.)
Only one song was removed from my list, so that's a pretty good percentage. And I feel much better having waited to get this approval.
The wait has been seemingly endless, and I can hardly tell you how anxious I have been, but the time has finally come!
I received cover art templates from Sublime Frequencies last weekend, and now I'm just editing the liner notes and arranging artwork to include on the covers.
There is also a slight possibility that the compilation will be released on double vinyl AND compact disc. That is entirely up to the label though. I will keep you all posted on that.
In other news, the editing for the documentary film is slowly but surely progressing. This is really hard work but I'm following a disciplined schedule, and I've got some great help from local film professionals. I am working nearly every day on this as well.
In case you haven't checked my blog recently http://menarigogo.blogspot.com , I have continued to post updates about some of the artists I met last year. Sadly, two have passed away since my visits with them. I will always cherish the brief time I was able to spend with them. This film and compilation is my tribute to their inspiration and generosity, and I want to do the best I can to share their words, music, and memories with all of you.
Thank you again for your encouragement, support, and faith. I hope to have more news for you regarding the release of the compilation very soon!!!
best regards,
Carl

Mr. Asyraf thank you so much for your helpful advice and information!!! Yes, i agreee, Bunyi Guitar wasn't pop yeh yeh at all.. but it opened the door for Pop Yeh Yeh to be created.. I guess technically Bunyi Guitar was a "twist" song : ) which was popular just before the beatles hit... actually some would say it was a chubby checker invention.. so it makes sense as a precursor to Pop Yeh Yeh.. I have also heard that the first Pop Yeh Yeh song was Suzana by the late legend, M Osman. I really appreciate your advice on all of this. Also,if I can find Ismail Kasdi, DHatta, or members of the CLiffters, that would be great.. I have several 45s from D Hatta , as well as one by the Cliffters. It would be great to meet Salim I --- wow... that would be amazing. Im sorry to hear about Siti Zaiton. she was one of my favorites... that's sad. And also, yes, I know that Salamiah Hassan and Sharifah Aini came later on, in the 70s - so not Pop Yeh Yeh.. but i want to try to meet artists of the 70s too -- at least the ones who were still making great music -- like these two singers.. Anyway, sorry for the complicated answer, I really appreciate all your tips --- please email me at carlitoyehyeh@yahoo.com if you find any clues to help me find these people. I do hope maybe you and I will also meet maybe... best regards, Carl

That's great. however, you don't need all those shots. take my word for it-- I lived in KL for over 3 years as an expat. Unless you are going into the jungles of Borneo...? Really, even then, Malaysia and Singapore are more modern than some rural parts of the US.
Please let me know if you need any advise-- also have a lot of friends there who would be happy to help you- or even take you to get some tehtarik or great Malay food. Just let me know!
Safe travels,
