Posted project update #26Now officially in post-production!
I am happy to announce that Firewall of Sound has officially wrapped production! What that means is we have finished all principal photography, including interviews, concerts, etc. I'll still be filming bits of b-roll as necessary during the editing process, but for the most part, I will be sitting down in front of my computer for weeks on end, cutting this great big monster down to a more manageable size. I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who helped me and my crew during our travels. Thank you for your hospitality/letting us interview you/letting us borrow your equipment/putting up with my incessant questioning!

Posted project update #25R.I.P. CD Alley (1995-2010)
CD Alley owner Fred Champion invited me to film in his store on January 31, their last day of business. Here's my tribute to the store that provided me with the music that got me through college and beyond: http://www.vimeo.com/9362492
Also, I'm heading off to Chicago next week to interview Josh Modell and the guys at Numero! Wish me luck! And also, BIG THANKS to fellow filmmaker Jennifer Burns for loaning me her camera and mics. If you haven't seen her documentary Vincent: A Life in Color, please do. It's excellent.

Posted project update #23UPDATE! Chicago Interview List
Hey, gang! Got some good news about our upcoming trip to Chicago. I am happy to report that Josh Modell, managing editor of the Onion A.V. Club, and Chris Johnson of the highly-regarded niche record label Numero, will be interviewed. We also have "maybe's" from Mark Richardson, managing editor of Pitchfork, and Jim DeRogatis, the co-host of NPR's Sound Opinions and pop music critic for the Chicago Sun-Times.

In case you haven't seen it yet, here's the new trailer for "Firewall of Sound," utilizing a lot of the footage we shot during the summer of 2009, in Athens, GA; New York; and Boston.

Posted project update #17State of the Project
I'm happy to announce that a rough cut of the film will be available for you to view in Spring 2010. Sadly, we are unable to travel to Chicago in time to meet this deadline, but I am convinced that waiting around any longer will only threaten to date our existing footage. The topics I address in "Firewall of Sound" are too timely and too easily changed by current events to allow for any more delays. I am planning on doing a handful of interviews in NC this January, but after that, I will be working solely on editing down the footage. I want to thank each and every one of you for your patience, and I apologize if I haven't been open enough about how the project is going.
I have another snippet from Julian Koster's concert at the Orange County Social Club in Chapel Hill. It's on Vimeo and the password to watch it is SAW.

Posted project update #15Grey Milk Concert Footage
Two of the people we made friends with while down in Athens, GA, were Jesse Houle and Sean Watson, an indie rock duo otherwise known as Grey Milk. When their tour schedule brought them up to Wilmington's own Soapbox Laundro-Lounge, we had the opportunity to film them in action. Here's a selection from their set:

Posted project update #10Video Update 7/30
This is my last video update before my crew and I leave for New York City and Boston next Tuesday. I cannot stress enough how much your contributions and words of praise have meant to me these last few weeks. I promise to keep close tabs on how the money you guys gave us is spent, and will have a detailed budget for you to download after our trip.
In the meantime, here's another excellent clip of Julian Koster. A few months ago, he decided to record a cover of Cole Porter's seminal work, "Night and Day." But instead of posting an MP3 file or leaking it to a blog, he decided to release the song in a much more imaginative way. Watch the clip, then download the result:

Happy to announce that Ryan Catbird (fellow Kickstarter and creator of Catbirdseat.org) and Noel Murray (writer for The Onion A.V. Club) have agreed to be interviewed for Firewall of Sound, and there are more to come! Don't forget you can still donate toward this project until July 10!
And for all the backers, I will have the first exclusive video update ready by the end of this week. Promise!

Posted project update #2THANK YOU!
This is so cool. In less than two weeks, we have raised our goal amount of $1,000, and none of it would have been possible without your help! This means my crew and I can now do all the awesome things I've been wanting to do ever since this project began, and I am eternally grateful for your support. What's even cooler is that we still have 28 days left to raise even more money, which could translate into us going to other places and filming even more people. So, point your friends and family in the direction of this project page, and thank you once again for supporting independent filmmaking!
Also, to show my appreciation, I'm going to donate money to THREE OTHER KICKSTARTER PROJECTS, because if I'm able to reach my goal in such a short amount of time, I'm gonna make sure other people can, too!

Posted project update #1Wow.
In less than 48 hours, we have already raised over 50% of our goal!! Thank you so much to everyone who has chipped in! Don't forget that in order for funds to be collected, we need a grand total of $1000 by July 10, so tell all your friends about this project!
