    Elephants? Elephants!

    Hello Beautiful Person!

I live in Portland, Oregon, a city that respects elephants. It's recently made the national news that the Oregon Department of Transportation is accommodating our pregnant pachyderm at our zoo's sensitive ears and nerves by keeping down the noise levels on road construction this summer. Here's the full story, if you don't believe me!

This update is dedicated to the amazing ideas from my fans and customers over the years! The Pachyderm Portmanteau contest is well underway with almost two dozen entries! Click here to see all the ones that have come in so far on the Bunny with a Toolbelt Facebook Page!

Here are a few images of some of my favorite elephant designs from the past few years, including several from Elephabet. Thanks for your support of this Kickstarter project!!! I'm not even halfway to my goal yet with 10 days to go, so if you could be so kind as to help me spread the word, I'd be ever so grateful.

    take care,
    Hilary

Yippie-ki-yay! Here's a few more entries in the Pachyderm Portmanteau contest--part of the free festivities this month to celebrate Elephabet!

Celebrate Elephabet no matter where you are!

    Hello Beautiful People!

Thank you so much for supporting my Kickstarter campaign--I'm almost a quarter of the way to reaching my goal--woo hoo!  This Kickstarter coincides with a slew of festivities I set up this month to celebrate my book Elephabet this month with shows and events in the Portland, Oregon area. If you're outside the region, read on--there's something here for you too.

First off:  Green Bean Books! If you don't know, Green Bean is the best little bookstore in Portland, located in the Alberta Arts District. Don't let the small size fool you--the selection is extremely well-curated, with not only a plethora of children's books, but great pre-teen and adult sections to boot. This store is a really fun destination because there are vending machines all over, dispensing moustaches and finger puppets and tiny treasures to the masses. The window displays are always fun, and when the weather's nice, there's a bush out back that doubles as a secret fort. There are two secret diorama sites inside the store, and those curious enough to explore will find them. I've attached a little video to this post show you my scene of a tiny reader with his elephant friends. Later on in the month, I'll be hosting a Pachyderm Portmanteau Party at Green Bean, click here for details.

where: Green Bean Books, 1600 NE Alberta Street

    when: May 2 - 31, 2012, 11am-6pm Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm Sundays

cost: Free! Elephabet books available for purchase.

I've also installed a rather large show of original and new work from Elephabet at my alma mater Oregon College of Art and Craft!

This Sunday, the excellent Hands on Cafe at the college will host an Elephabrunch--I've made elephant-themed centerpieces for the tables, and will be on hand to sign books all morning. Here's a sneak peek at the menu:

location: Oregon College of Art and Craft, 8245 SW Barnes Road, Portland

    when: Sunday, May 6, 2012

    time: 10am - 1pm

cost: Free to view the show. Brunch, books, and original elephant sculptures available for purchase at this event. The show will run through June 3, 2012. Hours: 10am-5pm daily

And, last but not least, I'm having a Pachyderm Portmanteau contest! Send me your drawings of the elephant you'd like to see after watching the Elephabet video (which I posted on my Kickstarter project page) and you might win the grand prize, which is a sculpture of that idea made by me! The earlier you enter, the more chances you have to win, so click here to get the rules.

    Let the wild rumpus begin!

    take care,

    Hilary

Elephabet wants to be an eBook and a poster when it grows up!

    Hey Beautiful People!

I have a few announcements for you all. First and foremost: if you're in the Portland, OR area, I have six free events coming up in May to celebrate Elephabet, including a show with many of the original pieces from the book at my alma mater Oregon College of Art and Craft, an ElephaBrunch, an ElePhoto booth at Crafty Wonderland, and two Pachyderm Portmanteau Parties at Green Bean Books and the Tigard Public Library! Click here to find out more about these events. My local newspaper the Oregonian published a nice little article about Elephabet yesterday too--click here to read it.

Did you know that I have just launched another Kickstarter campaign for Elephabet? I had a few unrealized dreams for the book last fall and just plain ran out of time. These dreams include making an eBook version of the book and creating a poster with all the images from the pages on one big colorful page.  I put together a great selection of rewards, including a few favorites from last year's Elephabet campaign - click here to take a look.

Last, but not least, I'm gearing up to do a second book this summer - Arfabet! I'll let you know when it officially launches, but I plan to do the same thing as I did last year with Elephabet: to create the bulk of the original work for the book during the Kickstarter campaign so you can come along for the ride! This time I'll even have a show with all the original work on display at Velvet da Vinci Gallery, so book your tickets for San Francisco at the end of October because it's a party you won't want to miss! (The show will run from October 24 - November 25, 2012. Opening night is Friday, October 26, 6-8 pm.)

Take care, and thanks for all your support of this project. I couldn't have done it without you!
