I love Penny's look, but maybe that's just because her first picture involves her carrying a wrench. It makes me all nostalgic for my theatre days. And to Tiff's point below, I also like her perkiness--but I see it more as a "I can do it and get it done" kinda attitude, which you need if you're going to live on a tight budget! Yay for confident women! As for the neighbor-animal things, I get why they're possible and appealing--it's very much in Penny's aesthetic of 30's-40's style cartoons. They can add a whimsical touch to nitty gritty topics. And people like animals (generally). I also think they're a bit dangerous. They've been used in the past to dehumanize certain groups of people, and while I totally understand that is definitely not your intention in any way, shape, or form, there is that history sitting there. It'd be kind of odd to have Penny, a human, surrounded by animals. I mean, are only her difficult fellow city dwellers animals, or are all her neighbors animals? While you mentioned her friends as well, the two examples provided are animals with negative connotations. This is probably waaaaaaaaaay too serious and I'm probably overthinking your question. Sorry! No coffee yet.

Poorcraft: A Comic Book Guide to Frugal Urban and Suburban Living! by IronSpike

Poorcraft means living well on less. I could fill a (comic) book with what I've learned about getting by on an artist's pay and liking it. And I will!
