Posted project update #11The Burn
Post CommentToday was spent getting the rest of the ship back into storage for the winter.
It was a wonderful year but things did not go as well as we were hoping for. We were looking forward to giving people rides and spending the week on the playa with everyone. I am sad to say we had a major hydraulic problem.
The ship ran great in Portland but once on the Playa we had trouble. Several hydraulic experts have looked into it and we are still stumped. You can read about the trip on the Blog here.
http://www.lostmachine.com/blog/The Fire Sails worked great. We were able to get the ship towed out onto the Playa and play with the sails. I always have fun pushing the red button that makes the fire go, but this was different. This was our first fire effect and I quickly found out what is better than pressing that button is watching other people press that button…seeing the look on their faces, the happiness in their eyes, the excitement in their smiles…that…that made all the work worth it.
If you were one of the people that joined us on deck Friday night thank you. I was feeling a bit down all week, your smiles brought me right back up, it meant the world to me.

Now that we are back we will be making the rest of the KickStarter rewards, some of you got your rewards already but a lot of the custom stuff still needs to be made. Thank you for being patient while we get your hoodies, t-shirts and Tripods made and mailed out to you.
Thank you for the support,Captain Andy
P.S. Here are some great photos from the Burn on NBC, The ship is in photo #92. Also photo #61 (Thunder Bird) is a project from Portland that a few of us worked on as well.

Posted project update #10We're on our way
Post CommentThank you for making this happen. This has been an incredible build and a lot of fun.
We have limited funds for Propane so thank you for the extra donations on the web site. Fire sails without the fire is just a pile of metal sticks. You can still donate on the site.
We'll see you out there.
Much love,
Captain Andy

Posted project update #8Hydraulics
Post CommentOne of our upgrades that you helped pay for it the new hydraulic controls. Last year we had solenoid controlled valving. The drive system was controlled by a circuit board that had layers of paint over the top of it from years of use (abuse). The system gave us some trouble and needed to be replaced.
The new manual valves are going to be much more Playa friendly. Today we got our Hydraulics back from the shop. Our friend Brian Campbell got them hooked up and tested. They are almost ready to be put on the ship.
What you see in the video is the speed control valve that will turn 3 big motors, there is a little motor hooked up in the middle of the table to see it working. There is also the diverter valve that controls forward and reverse. The last valve controls the tilt, it is hooked up to the ram so that you can see it moving. Unfortunately that valve does not return to center and will need to be replaced. A new one is already on order.
We're moving full speed ahead. I hope to give you one or two more updates before we leave. Thank you again,
Captain Andy

Posted project update #6Fire and Parts
Post CommentBusy Weekend.
We tested the Fire on Saturday and again on Sunday. This is one of 8 nozzles that will go on the ship.
The nozzle was an experiment to get more of a sheet of fire and not so much a huge ball of fire. I think it worked out well, but we'll need to do more testing : )
We've got the engine in the ship. Unfortunately our hydraulic pump is back ordered so we are picking a new one and hope to get that ordered in the next few days.
Thank you for supporting this.

Posted project update #5New Engine
Post CommentThank you everyone. The new Engine showed up today. 27 little horse power, but enough to move a ship.
Jules, Sparks and Andy L were over for the un-crating.
We also made a small scale model of the mechanization that will raise and lower the Yards.
The red blocks are just to add a little weight for the testing. In a few hours we'll begin building the full size armature.
So we're now moving on all fronts, we got people working on hydraulics, engine, motor, fire, wheels.....
Thank you so much, for allowing this to happen. I've been trying to send each of you a personal thank you and I know I still have a few more to go. I'm sorry if I haven't gotten to you yet, but I will get to you. It has been a busy week, but that is what we love.
Thank you,
Captain Andy
