John Teske

Seattle, WA

I am a composer, improviser and upright bassist living in Seattle. I studied acoustic and electroacoustic composition at the University of Washington with Joël-François Durand, Juan Pampin, and Josh Parmenter. Currently I'm writing a chamber opera with spoken word poet Steven Wilbur, and continuing to explore new sounds on the bass.

    pictures and progress

This August I rode with the trailer to Port Townsend. My father and I spent a few days crafting and upholstering the supports at his shop. Since then, I've been using the trailer for both rehearsals and performances. I just had my film developed and posted the pictures here:
    http://www.facebook.com/album.php...

There is still some work to be done, such as sealing the wood and adding the generator-powered lighting system.

I've been continuing work on the compositions and plan to record them in the early spring, to include on the CD.

In the meantime, I want offer some music:

a live recording of the Sept 16 performance of six graphic scores http://johnt.es/ke/six-graphic-scores

    and

Unused Lexical Variable, a former composer/improviser group

Thank you again for your support. It is very rewarding to be on the road, knowing that I'm creating music in a sustainable way.

    trailer release photos and audio

Thank you to everyone who came to the trailer release party. I was excited to see both new and familiar faces.

Below are photos of Colin and I with the trailer frame, showing the frame, and Wilson Shook and I performing a duet. I've also attached an audio clip of an improvised solo I performed at the show. It's mostly quiet, with some loud bursts near the end.

I am starting sketches for the compositions, thinking about the CDs, and ways to acknowledge the support of everyone involved. As of last night, the plan is to write two bass solos, a duet for basses, a duet for viola and bass, and a collection of five interrelated bass pieces.

Currently the trailer is back at Colin's shop waiting to be powder coated, while I look into lighting options and design the bass support structure. I'll post future updates when I have major developments and content.

    we're there!

We've reached the goal! With the article in the Seattle Times this morning, the project was revealed to an even larger community, and shortly thereafter the funding goal was met.

I appreciate the support of everyone that has backed the project, spread the word, and offered their advice and support.

While the kickstarter goal has been met, there is still more to do: outfitting the trailer to cradle the bass, designing and building the lighting system, making a waterproof cover, etc. Any funds over the cost of the trailer and accessories will be donated to Gallery 1412 and Bike Works.

Please join Wilson and I this Saturday for the trailer release party, and help us celebrate the creation of this magnificent machine. The trailer won't be bass-ready, but I'll have the unpainted frame and custom wheels to show off.

    Saturday, July 10, 8pm
    Gallery 1412
    1412 18th Ave
    Seattle, WA 98122
    $5-15 suggested donation

This is where the project gets interesting. The idea is out there, and now I'll be on the street with the trailer as a living example of sustainable living through biking. I hope that my actions will inspire thought and action in others.

    wheels, covers and compositions

I spent the past week talking with bike mechanics at different shops, gathering information to help me build a solid wheelset on a generator hub. Today I ordered a SRAM i-Light dynamo hub, a Shimano Deore hub, and a set of 20" double-walled rims drilled for 36 spokes (finished wheels below).

This weekend I talked to my dad who does upholstery work in Port Townsend, WA. He's done work for boats and can make a cover with specially designed and sealed seams to keep the rain out. After the trailer is built, I'll bike to his shop and spend a weekend to hang out and make the cover.

Lastly, I've been thinking about the compositions. As a bassist, I'd like to add to the solo bass repertoire. I've started some sketches but I'm waiting to see how many pieces are commissioned before I start writing notes. I'd like the pieces to be a set--unified yet able to stand alone. Think 10 short piano pieces, just a little bit longer and for bass. I'm excited to write these pieces and I'd love to write more.

Hey John - Nice to see you tonight. I don't actually have your email, so I can't send you a piano piece unless you send me your email. If you want, maybe you can make a bass piece to accompany one of my piano pieces, instead of an awesome version of Horse With No Name.

@EFFALO I can't tell you how excited I am! I may just put a velosynth on the trailer. with the power I want to generate, it could produce some serious sound.
