Although Space Age fashion may not be wholly foreign to the runway, the vast majority of today’s futuristic looks tend to alienate even the most fashion-forward and price-blind of women. Unless you’re Gaga or straight up blind-blind, there’s not much out there for those in need of a 21st century LBD (that’s “Little Black Dress” for the dudes and dads out there). Well, there wasn’t until Mary Huang and her computational couture came on the scene.

A “design technologist,” Huang’s Continuum Kickstarter project offers a futuristic fashion collection that combines the conceptual with the pleasantly practical, reinventing high-end custom design for the digital age. 

Huang’s project includes an interactive website and software that allow for the creation of user-generated fashion, “democratizing couture” as Huang explains it.

Through Continuum’s technologies, Huang has designed a dress that is in itself software (pun actually not intended), which customers can use to draw their own 3-D styles.

Those styles are then translated into cutting patterns, which can either be sent to a laser cutter and sewn together as a finished product, or, for the more DIY fashionistas out there, the pattern can be downloaded with instructions on exactly how to sew it yourself. A software-generated, custom couture gown that people actually want to wear in their non-digital lives? Now that’s the kind of 2.0 fashion a gal can get behind.
