Yesterday afternoon I took a trip up to Times Square to follow Molly Dilworth, an artist who first came across our radar when she did a Kickstarter project called Paintings for Satellites. It’s an incredibly imaginative series, Molly painting NYC rooftops in thick splashes of color, their intended audience the satellites of Google Earth (here’s a great Gizmodo piece on her art).
Molly’s Kickstarter project was a huge success, and earlier this year she was selected by New York City to paint portions of Times Square, too. The work is called “Cool Water, Hot Island,” and it will cover five blocks and 50,000 square feet of Times Square.
I spent an hour watching Molly work, and from it I put together the above three-minute portrait of Molly’s wonderful art — and the reactions of intrigued tourists — recorded on my iPhone. For more on Molly’s work and for shots of the piece on progress, visit her Flickr page.
