Am I old enough to say, “This is taking me back,” or to reminisce about the good old days? Seems like it, because there have been a slew of projects recently that have made me wax nostalgic about the time of pen pals (we’re talking postal service here), pay phones, and print (aka paper). Are these projects telling us something about our longing for the relics of the not-so-distant past? Here’s a look at some projects that shout “Eff you, obsolescence!” — in the nicest way possible, of course.

Jamie Hagenberger has been developing her photos in a darkroom for years, and from the work she shares in her video, you can see the unique effects she creates in the process. Well, recently the darkroom she counted on for her art went under, and she’s turned to Kickstarter to bring it back into her life — by making one herself. Building the digital world’s ancestor with her bare hands? Bring it on! Support the project here.

Remember the last time you touched a pay phone? Me either. But this project makes me want to pick up a sticky ol’ receiver again, or at least check the coin return. Richard Kelley will plant his “I Check Coin Returns” buttons in pay phones all over the country in an interesting joke’s-on-you scavenger hunt experiment. Prank calls anyone?

I’ve held on to the postcard-from-afar tradition pretty well (a quick pic from a foreign land is always a treat), but letters and stories sent via postal service — that’s a goner. And a letter from Japan written on rice paper? Forget about it. Unless, of course, you want to support Hallie Bodey in her awesome letter-writing project, in which case, this prehistoric artifact can be yours in the present.
